Dr David Goodall, ilmuwan asal Inggris ini diberkahi umur yang sangat panjang yaitu 104 tahun. Namun karena panjangnya umur, ia sangat berharap ajal segera menjemputnya. Ia mengaku menyesali umurnya yang panjang. Menurutnya kualitas hidupnya menurun dan tidak bisa merasakan nikmatnya hidup.
“Aku sangat menyesal mencapai usia setua ini,” ujar Goodall
“Aku tidak bahagia, aku ingin mati. Bukan, ini bukan kesedihan. Yang menyedihkan adalah jika seseorang dicegah (untuk memilih mati),” imbuhnya. Goodall pun memilih mengakhiri hidupnya sendiri melalui cara eutanasia atau suntik mati. Namun permintaannya ditolak pemerintah Western Australia dengan alasan Goodall tak memiliki penyakit mematikan. Goodall pun kecewa karena keinginannya diintervensi orang lain.
Keinginanku hanya ingin mati, dan aku pikir orang lain tak perlu intervensi,” kata dia.

Seperti diketahui, negara Bagian West Australia hanya memperbolehkan eutanasia bagi mereka yang menderita sakit parah. Premier Mark McGowan mengatakan pemerintah tidak akan mewujudkan keinginan Goodall, karena ia tak menderita penyakit mematikan apapun. Demi mewujudkan keinginannya, ia pun berencana bertolak ke Swiss. Sebab, negara tersebut pro terhadap permintaan mengakhiri hidup melalui eutanasia.
Ia mendapat bantuan dari lembaga Exit International yang menciptakan akun GoFundMe, untuk membantu mengumpulkan dana membeli tiket pesawat kelas bisnis. Berdasarkan rencana, Goodall akan meninggalkan Perth pada awal Mei. Ia akan ditemani sahabatnya sekaligus koordinator Exit’s West Australian, Carol O’Neil. Pria kelahiran Inggris tahun 1914 itu merupakan ahli botani dan ekologi. Dia mulai mengajar di University of Melbourne usai mendatangi Australia pada 1948.
Sejak merayakan ulang tahunnya ke-104 pada awal April lalu, ia telah memutuskan untuk mengakhiri hidupnya secara sukarela di Swiss.
